the best friends you’ll never have

So a new community just got started on livejournal: BSC Snark. In all honesty, I’m actually not that big on snark. A little snark here and there is fine, but I actually adore these books. Snark with love, perhaps, is the flavor of snark I go for. But anyway, I was reading a post about Karen’s Bunny by Lilysela when I saw this picture:

Now, I have never been a fan of Susan Tang’s interior artwork for the LS books. It always seems like she got bored after drawing the face of the character and just scribbled the rest. Looking at these illustrations, I get the impression that I, too, could make a living being an illustrator if these drawings are considered good enough to be used throughout a series that lasts for over a hundred books. But just look at this picture! I realize that yes, this scene actually does happen in the book. That does not mean, however, that it is not a weird and disturbing image. The look on Andrew’s face, the fact that he seems to be gripping onto something imaginary, his tiger face, everything… it’s all just… WRONG.

I see your point – (a) I’m sure I could draw that – heck, Mallory could have done a better job – and (b), there is something odd about the picture. I think it’s the fact that his pants are half off. Funnily enough, every time I mention to a friend that I’m re-reading my BSC books, they always mention how much they hate Karen. Someone out there must have liked her for this series to continue!!

That picture is disturbing. I hadn’t read the book, nor did I see the post, and when I came here and saw that I was so confused. I can’t believe that appeared in a book! At first glance, I thought it was someone running away from a spanking — but BSC parents don’t spank! Then I thought “child porn?” but why would greer draw children’s porn and post it… Wow, that’s a special picture. :)

I think it’s funny how much the illustrator makes Karen look like a cross between Shy Violet (Rainbow Brite)and Jeanette (the Chipette). Actually, she looks a lot like my sister did at seven, too.

I liked Karen when I was a kid! Of course, I grew out of her before book 50, but still. I don’t think she’s as annoying as everyone says.
LOL @ the fact that out of every scene they could illustrate from that book, they chose the pants-less one. Awkward.

I loved Karen when i was a kid… actually I was quite a bit like her when I was younger. (I mellowed out though…though I’m still bossy when I want to be :D ..but more in a playful way).
Wow..that picture is…weird…

I swear on Karen’s campout she looks like a mini Hilary Duff.
