the best friends you’ll never have

There are two instances in the series where the characters are based off of real, existing people and Ann has admitted this.

The first is that the characters of Mary Anne and Kristy are based off of Ann and her childhood best friend, Beth. Ann is kind of mousy and quiet, whereas Beth is loud and outgoing. Notice, however, that Ann gave herself a hot boyfriend–something that never happened in real life. Hmm. Anyway, so their friendship dynamic is based on Ann’s and Beth’s, and so are the personalities, just exaggerated.

The other instance of real-life people purposefully brought into a character happens with the Perkins family. The Perkins family in the books is a fascimile of the Perkins family in real life, forever frozen in Stoneybrook time. There is a real Myriah, Gabbie, and Laura.

Why did Ann choose to put this real family in the books? Why, Mrs. Perkins is, in real life–wait for it–Beth, childhood best friend. So when Kristy (adolescent Beth) moved away, Mrs. Perkins (adult Beth) moved in. When Kristy sits for the Perkins girls, she is in fact sitting for her future children.

Freaky!

I like the analysis, but does Ann ever really say anything about how Mary Anne is actually based on her? I always thought that she just claimed she was most *like* Mary Anne.
It would make sense, though - Mary Anne is probably what a lot of shy girls wish they could be like (quiet, comes out of her shell as the series progresses and is well-liked by all).

“When Kristy sits for the Perkins girls, she is in fact sitting for her future children.”

Feck. I never thought of it like that. What an weird concept.

@myu: in her biography, ann says that kristy and ma are her and ann, with their personality traits amplified.

Lol that was a little confusing at first, had to read it slowly to work it out in my head. It’s kinda funny if you think about Logan’s presence…I guess on paper you can be who you want to be. Interesting since I have read online about how gay (or perhaps potentially gay)the characters of Logan and Kristy both seem to be…

@Laura: I have never really bought Kristy as being gay–i think it’s based on stereotypes more than anything else. The only character in all of BSC that I think was absolutely written as gay is ducky from ca diaries. That doesn’t mean no one in the bsc eventually COULDN’T be, but i think most people, are still trying to discover who they are and are also certainly not going to come out in a middle school environment.

I didn’t mean that Ann wishes she were straight though–I just meant that she seemed kind of mousy and unpopular and she made her doppelganger be the one who got the cute boyf, which i found funny. :)

I always wondered to what extent the Perkins girls were based on the real Perkins’ girls.

I always wondered if Myriah and Gabbie really were so talented. Myriah would be understandable but Gabbie is freakily advanced.

I think the Perkins girls are among my favourite charges.

@Colette: I can’t stand the Perkins girls… they’re too perfect.

Greer - I agree with you, but it was amusing to read different opinions. It is kinda cute how “her” character got the cool boyfriend even though she was so shy. I wonder if the ghostwriters knew MA was based on her…

There’s an early book in the series (can’t remember which one, and mine are unfortunately in storage) dedicated to the real-life Claire and Margo. I remember re-reading that book within the past few years and seeing that it said something like “Claire (lastname), class of 2004 and Margo (lastname), class of 2005″ or something like that and realizing that that must have seemed sooooo far in the future when it was written!
